Weed Removal Tips

If you have an organic garden, you do not use chemical pesticides or fertilizers. However, not using chemicals can make controlling pesky weeds a little more difficult. There are several ways to eliminate weeds from your garden using natural methods. These weed removal tips can teach you how.

Use mulch as a natural alternative

Wood chips, straw and other forms of heavy mulch can control your weeds. Apply the mulch to any area that is prone to weeds, but do not overdo it or put mulch close to where you have plants. The mulch also softens the soil, making weeds easier to remove. Using mulch is inexpensive and is healthier than chemical alternatives. If you do not have mulch, you can simply reuse your grass clippings.

Apply vinegar to your weeds

Vinegar in large scale use can get a little expensive, but it is effective. Spraying vinegar on weeds kills them. Weeds that are in direct sunlight turn brown a matter of hours after you spray them. There is one caveat: vinegar does not discriminate. If you spray it near desirable plants, those can die too.

Turn your topsoil

You should turn your topsoil early in the year before you plant any new seeds. When you till the topsoil, wait a couple of days for weeds to appear. Once this happens, heavily mulch the area so the weeds die off.

Torch the weeds

Weed torches are a very effective, easy and quick way to get rid of weeds. They run on propane and use direct heat to burn the tops of weeds. As with vinegar, use care so you do not destroy the plants you want to keep in your garden.

Organic gardening is an environmentally friendly way to grow plants. It uses healthier methods of producing your crops. Weeding your lawn naturally may require a little more effort, but if you know how to deal with weeds organically you can manage them just as effectively.
