Using a String Trimmer

There are many things you should consider when using a string trimmer. You need to stay safe when operating it. You also have to use it correctly to get the results you desire.

Using a string trimmer safely

Whenever you use a string trimmer, make sure to wear protective gear. This includes quality ear protectors, thick safety glasses and gloves made of a heavy duty material. If you are working in a dusty area, wear a dust mask, as well. Make sure you know how to operate the trimmer correctly, whether by checking the instructions or by asking an experienced person to explain proper use guidelines. Check your work area prior to starting and pick up any loose sticks, rocks or wires. These items can get tangled and get thrown out by the trimmer's nylon strings. Check the installation of the trimmer's cap and spool, and make sure there are no broken parts. They are dangerous if they come off while you are operating the trimmer.

Getting good results from a string trimmer

Move the trimmer back-and-forth or side-to-side slowly over your work area. Keep the cutting head level. Let only the tip of spinning line do the work, otherwise you may overload the motor. Walk forwards only, never back or sideways; tripping is dangerous. With many string trimmers, you can refresh the cutting line with a "bump feed" mechanism. Tap the spool on the ground, and the centrifugal force lets out more line and the trimmer cuts it to the proper length. Turn the power off when you are finished by switching the off button or releasing the throttle. Unplug all extension cords and disconnect the spark plug wire if you are using a gasoline-powered model.

Follow these steps, and you do good and safe work with your string trimmer.
